Green Initiatives at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Water Conservation

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is dedicated to sustainable water use, preserving this scarce and precious resource for future generations and reducing our impact on the environment.

Our 200,000-litre water storage tank collects water during the rainy season. This water is cleaned and filtered for use in our gardens, maintenance, and toilets—everything except food preparation, hand washing, and drinking! We now capture enough water to maintain our grounds, clean pathways and visitor areas, grow green grass for our animals, and use in public amenities.

We also replaced older pipes to reduce leakage and introduced push-timer taps, dual-flush toiles, and waterless urinals. Our grounds are planted with native and drought-tolerant plants, and we use plenty of mulch to minimize evaporation and the need for watering.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary has reduced its town water consumption by 84% since 2005, or about two million litres a year!
