Education Programs 2009

Only 15 minutes from the heart of Brisbane City, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is a popular destination for primary, high school and vacation care excursions.  Come and experience the unique opportunity of getting up close and personal with Australia’s amazing wildlife.  

Lone Pine's qualified education staff will guide your school students through our two hour comprehensive program learning all about adaptations, food webs, ecology and conservation of our native species.  Older students will have the opportunity to explore and discuss the impacts and threats’ facing the future conservation of Australia’s endangered species.

Students have the opportunity to explore the rest of the sanctuary at no extra cost after your education program.  

Complimentary kangaroo food is provided for each student.

A resource pack including teacher’s notes and a student workbook will be sent once the booking date and program has been confirmed to assist with your excursion preparation. Our school resource material includes workbooks for kindergarten to grade 9. Health and safety information for risk assessments are also included in the resource pack.

Note: A minimum number of students are required for each program booking. Please download a copy of our program for rates and student number requirements.

 

School programs

We offer a variety of programs designed to meet the kindergarten, primary and high school core learning outcomes for the Queensland curriculum.

We also offer a special needs and ESL program where students can experience touching our reptiles, koalas and kangaroos.

Programs to suit your specific needs can be arranged upon request.

 

Australian Native Animals
Year 1 to 7

Experience the excitement of close encounters with our native animals while learning about their unique adaptations to the Australian environment.  Choose 3 presentations from:

Wombat


Koala (inc. patting)


Bird of prey flight show (for year 1 or older students)


Southern cassowary (an endangered species)


Reptile residents (inc. touching)


Kangaroo (inc. feeding)


Dingo

 

Carnivorous birds of the night

 

Guided tour

 

Tasmanian devil talk (discussion on the facial tumour disease)

 

 

Wild life / Farm life
Kindergarten to Year 2

Discover the similarities and differences between farm animals and Australian wildlife. Activities include:

Farm life: an introduction to the farm animals in Lone Pine's barn

Life in the wild: a hands-on experience involving a variety of native wildlife

Koala encounter (inc. patting)

Kangaroo feeding: each student receives a free bag of food

Ask about our daily sheep dog show presentations that compliment this program perfectly!

 

Threatened Wildlife
Year 4 to 7

An introduction to some of Australia's threatened species and the challenges that they face in the wild. Activities include:

Guided tour of Lone Pine's threatened species

Koala presentation (inc. patting)

Endangered encounters: explore the threats facing native wildlife

Kangaroo feeding: each student receives a free bag of food

Primary school programs
 

 

High school programs

Our high school program is currently expanding.

We offer the opportunity for students to directly engage with Australian wildlife through education sessions. Your students will experience a close encounter with reptiles, mammals and birds while discussing the ecology and conservation of these species.

Australian Conservation Ecology
Year 8 to 12

Choose up to three presentations from the following:

   Predator Prey Relationships (minimum 40 students) - watch our breathtaking raptors in flight while learning about the unique predator prey relationships these birds have in the Australian bush. Discussion focuses on the unique evolution of Australia’s top predators, the important role they play and threats they face. (30 mins)                                                                            

  Backyard Ecology – exploring wildlife living in urban environments; case study discussion with three species exploring the species ecology and ability/inability to adapt to the modified landscape. Discussion focuses on threats and steps we can take for conservation. (45 mins)

  Koala Presentation – exploring the ecology and adaptations of Australia’s unique iconic marsupial, the koala; discuss threats and conservation options we can undertake in assisting the wild koala population. (30 mins)

  Guided Tour - students will have the opportunity to view and discuss the unique aspects of a variety of native species. Our endangered species will be included in the tour followed with brief discussion on their conservation status.

 

**Incorporated into your itinerary is a kangaroo feeding timeslot, giving students the opportunity to interact with over 130 macropods.  (30 to 45 mins)

**Content of presentations is altered to suit your year level requirements and specific program requests.

 

Foreign Language Tours
Year 8 to 12

An introduction to Australia’s wildlife spoken in a foreign language.  This program is suited to students studying languages as part of their secondary school curriculum.  Availability of languages offered is subject to change; please contact the education department for enquiries. Commonly available languages are Japanese, German and French.

Activities include:

  Guided tour of the sanctuary (30 mins)

  Koala encounter  (15 mins)

  Kangaroo introduction & feeding (30 mins)

Vacation care program

Why not bring your outside school hours care group to Lone Pine for a fun and fact-filled day!                                              Our education team will introduce you to a variety of different animals and provide students with        a greater appreciation of native wildlife. The program includes:

Kangaroo feeding: hand feed kangaroos and wallabies.  An all time favourite activity!

 

Koala presentation: learn about and meet one of the koalas that calls Lone Pine home.

 

Discovery session: an interactive activity with native fauna, skulls, feathers, skin and more.

 

Treasure hunt: explore the sanctuary while scavenging and searching for hidden treasures!
