Mainly solitary, but may
occur in large numbers when grazing at night.

Feeds exclusively on
grasses, young shoots and leaves of heath plants and grass trees.

| Breeding |
| A
single young is born at anytime of the year on mainland Australia
and between January and July in Tasmania. The joey remains in
the pouch for nine months and continues to suckle until twelve to
seventeen months of age. |

Distributed in coastal
woodlands and open forests in south-eastern Australia.
